To the editor: State Sen. Dan Knodl, R-Germantown, in his partisan opinion piece of March 14, 2024, is not only misleading, but also contains many falsehoods. The GOP tax cuts vetoed by Gov. Evers weren’t vetoed because they favor the rich as he claims, but because they were in fact fiscally irresponsible and unsustainable as Gov. Evers rightfully proclaimed.

Knodl goes on to claim that these tax cuts, based on our current budget surplus (thanks to onetime federal pandemic aid) would still provide us with a budget surplus exceeding $1 billion at the end of the current budget year. However, the tax cuts as passed by the fiscally irresponsible GOP legislature don’t expire after a year or two. Even the non-partisan Legislative Fiscal Bureau reported they would lead to a $3 billion deficit in the 2027 budget.

Yes, we could all appreciate a cut in taxes, but not one that would leave us in the hole down the road. How would they fill that hole?
