WASHINGTON COUNTY 鈥 In one week voters will head to the polls in the 2024 spring election, and in Washington County there will be a number of contested races at just about every level of government on the April 2 ballot.

Presidential preference primary election

In the Democratic presidential preference primary election, President Joe Biden, (incumbent) will be up against Dean Phillips. There is also an option for an 鈥渦ninstructed delegation.鈥

Voters can select 鈥渦ninstructed delegation鈥 in place of a write-in candidate if they do not like any of the choices available in the primary election.

In the Republican presidential preference primary election, Chris Christie, Vivek Ramaswamy, Ron DeSantis, Nikki Haley, former President Donald Trump and 鈥渦ninstructed delegation鈥 will appear on the ballot.

Christie, DeSantis, Ramaswamy and Haley have all pulled out of the Republican presidential primary, but will still appear on the ballot.

County elections

There are four contested elections for seats on the Washington County Board in the April 2 general election.

In District 2, Justice Madl will take on Marietta Bailey (incumbent).

In District 5, Mary Ann Rzeszutek will face off against Linda Gurath (incumbent).

In District 7, Anne Trautner and Steve Schmitt will be up against each other for the seat, which was vacated by former Supervisor William Symicek in 2023.

In District 21, Robert Hartwig (incumbent) will be challenged by Jacob Patrick.

Municipal elections

There are six municipal-level elections that will be contested in the April 2 general election, with three contested alderman elections in West Bend, one contested village trustee election in Germantown, one 鈥渧ote for not more than four鈥 village trustee election in Kewaskum and one contested town board supervisor election in Erin.

West Bend

In District 1, John Butschlick (incumbent) will be challenged by Neil Fulton.

In District 5, Mary Beth Seiser will be up against Viney Pheng for the seat. The seat had been Alderman Jed Dolnick鈥檚 seat on the common council, but he announced in 2023 that he would not seek re-election.

In District 7, Bill Schmidt will challenge Justice Madl (incumbent) for the common council seat.

Germantown

In District 4, Jan Miller (incumbent) will be up against Jason Sikora for a seat on the Village Board.

Kewaskum

In Kewaskum, there will be a 鈥渧ote for not more than four鈥 election between five candidates for village trustee positions. The candidates include Marnie Parse (incumbent), Mary Schlitt, Justin Weninger (incumbent), Richard Knoebel (incumbent) and Bret Klapper.

Town of Erin

Four candidates will face off against each other for two seats on the Erin Town Board in a 鈥渧ote for not more than two鈥 election, including Pat Landon, Michael Stapleton (incumbent), Elaine Gonya and Ken Priesgen.

School board elections

There are eight contested races for school boards that are in, or include a portion of, Washington County in the April 2 general election. Those races include:

Cedarburg School Board

Four candidates will face off against each other in a 鈥渧ote for not more than three鈥 election for three seats on the Cedarburg School Board. The candidates include David Krier (incumbent), Nick Silvaggi (incumbent), Krystal Groth and Kate Noetzel (incumbent).

Germantown School Board

There are two seats up for grabs on the Germantown School Board in the April 2 general election. Jeff Voyer will take on Tracy Pawlak (incumbent) for at-large seat 1 on the board. NOTE: This race was one of three primary races held on Feb. 20.

Fred Fleitz will take on Tom Barney (incumbent) for at-large seat 7 on the board.

Hartford Joint 1 School Board

Two seats are up for grabs on the Hartford Joint 1 School Board in the April 2 general election, and four candidates will face off in the 鈥渧ote for not more than two鈥 election.

Candidates include Terrence Perfect, Ian Gronbeck, Barbara Lindert and Ed Behnke (incumbent).

Hartford Union High School Board

There will be a 鈥渧ote for not more than two鈥 election between four candidates for two seats on the Hartford Union High School Board in the April 2 general election. Candidates include Heather Barrie, Ian Gronbeck, Nolan Jackett and Damon Morgan.

Lomira School Board

One of the two races for Lomira School Board will be contested in the April 2 general election, as three candidates will face off in a 鈥渧ote for not more than two鈥 election for two seats on the board for School Board member Zone 3. Candidates include Robert Wondra (incumbent), Kristen Mielke (incumbent) and Brenda Michels.

Slinger School Board

Three candidates are running against each other in a 鈥渧ote for not more than two鈥 election for two seats on the Slinger School Board. The candidates include Ken Strupp (incumbent), Bill Brewer and Cherie Rhodes (incumbent).

West Bend School Board

Four candidates will face off in a 鈥渧ote for not more than two鈥 election for two seats on the West Bend School Board in the April 2 general election. The candidates include Chris Zwygart (incumbent), Bill Schulz, Chris Jenkins and Sonal Ramani.

Referendums on spring ballot

There are four referendum questions that will appear on the April 2 general election ballot in Washington County (though voters will only see two or three on their ballots), including two state referendums, a Village of Germantown referendum and a Herman-Neosho-Rubicon School District referendum.

State referendums

Question 1: 鈥淯se of private funds in election administration. Shall section 7 (1) of article III of the constitution be created to provide that private donations and grants may not be applied for, accepted, expended, or used in connection with the conduct of any primary, election, or referendum?鈥

Question 2: 鈥淪tate Election officials. Shall section 7 (2) of article III of the constitution be created to provide that only election officials designated by law may perform tasks in the conduct of primaries, elections, and referendums?鈥

Village of Germantown referendum

Question: 鈥淯nder state law, the increase in the levy of the Village of Germantown for the tax to be imposed for the next fiscal year, 2025, is limited to 2.97% , which results in a levy of $16,212,166. Shall the Village of Germantown be allowed to exceed this limit and increase the levy for the next fiscal year, 2025, and on an ongoing basis, for the purpose of hiring four (4) new police officers and ten (10) new firefighter-paramedics, by a total of 8.941%, which results in a levy of $17,661,634?鈥

Herman-Neosho-Rubicon School District referendum

Question: 鈥淪hall the Herman-Neosho-Rubicon School District, Dodge and Washington Counties, Wisconsin be authorized to issue pursuant to Chapter 67 of the Wisconsin Statutes, general obligation bonds in an amount not to exceed $23,000,000 for the public purpose of paying the cost of a school building and facility improvement project consisting of: construction of additions, renovations, building infrastructure and site improvements, and acquisition of furnishings, fixtures, and equipment to create a single campus at the current intermediate school site?"
